Here we aim to provide an example of what a good growth plan could be. It is not mandatory to use exactly the same template but having the information outlined here in one format or another is fairly useful.
It is strongly recommended that you use Notion to track your OKRs.
We assume that you have already gone through [OKRs] Ensuring solid career growth and Growth thinking trigger documents.
The main components of a growth plan
- Timeline - this will usually be 5-6-months period aligned with the people reviews
- Goal - this is the goal that you set for yourself for the next 5-6 months
- Ex. Achieve the requirements for a Senior Engineer by improving <this and that> competencies in 6-months
- Ex. Become an independent contributor to by owning the e2e feature development for product A
- Ex. Transition into the role of an Engineering Lead by taking ownership of team A and the formally advocating and supporting the development of team members A, B and C
- Ex. Transition into the role of a Senior Engineer by handing over my responsibilities as an Engineering Lead to person A and taking ownership of X and Z as a maker
- 2-3 OKRs with 3-5 KRs per quarter within the 6-months period. You can follow the hints for creating such OKRs in [OKRs] Ensuring solid career growth
- It is OK to first define the first 3-months / quarter OKRs and at another set of OKRs for the second 3-months / quarter later on when new tribe / chapter / team OKRs are defined.
- An action plan with the main actions you should take in order to make sure that you can achieve each of the aforementioned OKRs.
- A checklist with 4-5 actions per OKR is mostly good enough as long as they are well-thought. The latter means that it is very clearly how getting that done helps achieving the KRs in the OKR
- It is recommended that you specify any dependencies such as on some learning resources, time constraints, other teams or people in the team, other initiatives that are blocking you. How will you work around those? Will you be able to achieve your OKR if some of those dependencies do not resolve?
